  18. <p>     One of modern medicine's disheartening setbacks has been the
  19. emergence of TB strains that are resistant to standard
  20. medication. In last week's Nature, researchers from Hammersmith
  21. Hospital in London and from the Pasteur Institute in Paris
  22. report they have uncovered the genetic reason behind this
  23. dangerous trend. They have discovered that common forms of the
  24. TB bacterium bear a gene that makes it susceptible to the
  25. antibiotic isoniazid--a gene that is missing in drug-resistant
  26. strains. The finding could lead to improved diagnostic tests
  27. that will help doctors treat people with drug-resistant TB
  28. before they can pass the infection on to others.
